With the death of Queen
Victoria in 1901, her son,
Edward VII, became the new
king of England. Edward and
his wife Alexandra had their
own impact in the world of
fashion. An extremely wealthy
society emerged with a high
optimism of the new century.
Diamonds were absolutely
essential, pearls were quite
popular, and the discovery of
platinum added a monochromatic
appearance that was especially
desired in Edwardian times.
Combinations of other stones
were used to add color and
interest such as rubies,
sapphires, and emeralds, as
well as Edward and Alexandra's
favorites, amethyst and
peridot. The designs that were
favored were bows, filigree
design resembling fine lace,
and anything having the
impression of sophistication
and elegance. |
