Setting a budget

Setting a Budget

Before you set out to buy an engagement ring, which will be one of the most significant purchases you will make in your lifetime, it is important to make a decision up front about your budget. After all, an engagement ring is a lasting symbol of the love and life-long commitment you have made to each other. Your choice of ring represents the value you place on your relationship and the importance of your upcoming marriage; your budget should reflect the standard you have established as you search for that perfect ring.

Before you let the pressure get to you though, our first piece of advice is to forget the old rule about spending the equivalent of two or three month’s salary! Some couples spend less than three month’s salary and some spend much more. The average cost of an engagement ring in the U.S. in 2013 is actually about $6500, depending upon where you live; the average size for a center stone is between 1.0 and 1.4 carats. Your budget, however, should be based on how much you feel is appropriate to spend on a ring, based upon your comfort level, your income and the other wedding related expenditures you are facing. You and your bride-to-be are unique; your particular financial situation should be taken into account when determining your budget, so that you start out on the right foot together as a couple. Once your total budget is set, a helpful guideline is to assign 80% of it towards your center stone and 20% for the appropriate mounting.
